Hi!

I hope you all enjoyed the New Year parties and you are ready to start fresh and open to new tennis ideas.

I have prepared two articles for you, but I will save them for the next issue. In this issue I want to thank 2 authors who were kind enough to contribute to the Tennis Strategy section of the website.

-------------------------------------------
1. What's new?
-------------------------------------------

a) Play Better Tennis With Proper Placement Not More Power

An excellent article by Scott Baker from Tennis4You.com.

He explains how and why placement of shots must come first. Power follows later...

Placement not Power

b) How to Prepare for Pressure Points in a Tennis Match?

I wish to thank Mike Uretsky for this article. You can read more about Mike at the bottom of the article, but first make sure you read it and apply the info to your game.

2. Q&A
--------------------------------

I received an email from Dom but when I replied I found out that he entered his email wrong.

So Dom, if you are on the list, here's my answer...

Q:

Hi. I am 19. I am a serve and volleyer. Pat Rafter is my hero. It's mainly cos i adore him why i play and try and resemble off him.

Don't get me wrong. I don't just serve and volley cos Pat Rafter is my hero. Serve and volley is what i enjoy best and serve and volley is how i play best also. Obviously grass suits my style of play.

The problem is round my area there is no grass courts to be found. Only hard courts are to be found where i live.

My question is. Could you give me any tips and ideas on how to continue playing good serve and volley but on hard courts. Thanks

A:
Hi Dom,

Thanks for the email.

OK, tips on how to play well serve & volley on hard courts?

Most of the tactics is the same as on grass. I think you need to be slightly more patient when coming to the net.

Here's what you can do:

- come to the nef after the first serve - more than 2/3 of the time
- vary your first serve - down the T, wide, in the body (especially if you can slice in the body)
- take the ball early when at the baseline so that you can get to the net quicker
- approach with slice if you have the skills
- keep the ball low when approaching the net
- if you play a very good "passer" volley short - drop volley
- when you stretch your opponent from the baseline and they defend with a slow floating ball, run in and play a volley
- approach mostly down the line
- chip & charge on second serves if you can

Whew, that's for now...

Hope that helps.

Try and be more specific if you want to know more...

There are a lot of tactical answers in the Tennis Strategy ebook. You might want to check that one out.

-----------------------------------------

That's it for this week, I'll be in touch again in two weeks.

Best regards,

Tomaz
