a) Questions of Truth When we see that a player isn't doing something right and we "tell" them so, they usually defend and try to prove their point (for their ego's sake) or feel that something is wrong with them and lose faith in themselves. Questions are more neutral than criticism and leave the decisions to the player. They also teach players to think. Questions are also more appropriate than criticism, because what people need is awareness of what is going on, not scolding from others (which repeats parental behavior). Then we make our own choices. Here are three strategic questions that draw out important truths. They are typically used by coaches, but players can ask themselves these questions as well. Q1: i lost a match this summer that practically brought me tears although the tears should have been for someone else... you see I was playing this old rival in front of a good crowd at a masters tournament. I went through him so easily the first set I thought it was too good to be true. The next set I was up 5-1 and had a match point or two and lost them .... I was thinking the match was not really that exciting and i felt sorry for my opponent... Well he reeled off six straight games and won the next set. What do i do with the thoughts of the match really not being that exciting and trying to jazz it up a bit?
A1:
Sometimes we all want too much. If I understand correctly, you had: And besides winning this you ALSO wanted to make it exciting? Aren't those 3 things enough? Winning a final of the tournament in front of crowd against your rival? ;) Only you know the answer for yourself. He was a good player to turn it all around but I could not muster any decisive aggression...yes i did feel sorry for him... Yes, this is a trap. At the end, you need to decide again: what do you want more: 1. to win a match and have your opponents feel not so good because they lost OR 2. To let your opponents into the match and very likely lose, but THEY will not feel so bad. (You will.) In which case do you feel worse: beating them (and maybe they don't like you too much) or losing a match (and maybe they like you - or do winners like losers)? Choice is yours.
I felt like getting aggressive had to pull me out of my groove which was working for me...unfortunately it did not last long. My mom passed on earlier on in the spring and I just had no aggression left in this match what do you do with the thought of wanting revenge or another chance with the opponent? Let it go, right? I understand. Maybe it was not the time to play matches like this. What to with revenge feelings? It's a very powerful drive which you can use to improve a lot. I've lost some matches and realized my weaknesses. I planned a revenge for a while but eventually lost that personal revenge this and focused more on improving my skills so that I won't lose again to players of the "same type". So not exactly that person, but to players who can exploit my weaknesses. It works well, because revenge can blind you and makes you very tense when you play that opponent. And you won't play best tennis in that state.
-------------------------------- That's it for this week, I hope you decide to check the fre.e tennis videos and let me know what you think. Best regards, Tomaz
