How To Play The Big Points And Thoughts On Tennis Competition
February 21, 2010
Hi,

The main reason why top players are top and not just good is mostly because they play the big points better than the rest.

How do they play big points and what you can learn from them is the main article on TennisMindGame.com this week.

I've also answered a question on my blog regarding the tennis competition.

It's a very interesting subject and I welcome all thoughts and opinions which you can share in the comments on the blog.

1. What's New?
--------------------------------

a) Some coaches argue that there aren't really so called big points. A point is a point and the player should strive to win every point, regardless of the score.

I agree with the second part but I also know that some players will perceive some points as very important.

They will react to those situations emotionally even if I tell them million times that all points are equal.

These players (and I think that's most of us) need some guidelines on how to prepare for big points.

Competing in the game of tennis is mentally very demanding for various reasons. While most players hate the feeling of losing there are also some players who don't like to beat people.

They sympathize with their loss and find it hard to play "seriously". I've encountered this problem before when I worked on the mental game with a top 10 under 18 player in Slovenia.

His problem was that he was actually not aware that he didn't like his opponents to suffer because he beat them. So there was always this hidden "brake" that held him back when he had a chance to close out the match.

Once he became aware that this was a problem, I explained to him the exact same thing that I explained to the girl asking me a similar question on the blog...

Thanks for reading the newsletter and let me know if you have a question or two about the mental game or any other part of tennis game that you'd like to see answered on the main site or on the blog!

Best, Tomaz
