Being nervous in a match

by Badri
(Provo, UT)

I played a 4.0 tennis tournament semi finals yesterday. I was playing beautifully in the zone during practice and then when the match began I returned serves beautifully but when the rallies began I froze.

When my opponent served slow, I returned poorly or for some reason I was hesitating while returning serves.

While rallying I was nervous that I will hit every rally shot long so I was controlling my swing too much.

Even the points I won didn't feel too good as I was not winning them the correct way.

How does one over come this? How do I play freely and yet focussed?

How do I play to win a point and enjoy it?

Hi,

Your attitude towards the game is faulty.
You should not play to win the point, you play and that's it. You cannot control the outcome, the result. You only can control your effort. Let it all go, don't care and you will play your best!

Techniques to focus and relax:

- keep moving
- keep tracking the ball
- listen to your breathing, keep it deep and slow

Let it go and hit well
