Can't find a winning strategy

I just can't find a tactic that I can win with.

I'm not good at being a defensive baseliner because I can't hold my nerve and I will be the one losing the point.

I can't be a serve and volleyer because my serve is ok, but not so strong and my volley doesn't always work because I get nervous.

I think I might be an attacking baseliner or an all rounder, but I can't find a way to do it, because I can't manage to aim my shots to the sides well because when I try to on purpose aim my shot it will go to the net, out or will go really high.

My drop shots are fine, but when I try to lob I get nervous and either put the ball up for my opponent to smash, or it goes out.

Cam someone please help me find a way that I can win, or tell me how I can improve one of the tactics that I'm not so good at?

cooling strategy :-)

Well, the problem is in your mind. Few tips:
* find a sentence that work for you "be like B.Borg, be like a wall" (comment by J.McEnroe AFAIR, "he was like a wall, every ball was coming back")

* ease down the situation "this is only a game, and I am enjoying it"

* as above, after a lost point "no big deal, even Sampras makes mistakes"

* drink a beer

* practice -- I mean play more matches, because after a time the match will be routine and you will focus on technique not the nerves

* and do not try to push situation in court, try to develop winning situation, but do not try to take winner each time

a style of play
by: Mike

Yes, I agree that not being so pressured by thinking I have to get a winner will help me with a style of play, but the problem is that I don't have a style of play.

Everybody always says to me " play your game" but I don't know what actually is " my game."

Well, "your game" means that you are probably focusing too much on winning. Nice sentence from Polish movie "Big Szu" (changed to tennis) -- "you are playing to win, that's wrong. Tennis is about good match, and victory will come along."

And so I try to play my best, i.e. executing the best shot in every given moment. Knowing weaknesses of your opponent is a big help -- does she/he likes to run? Is his/her backhand good? Is she/he nervous, etc. :-)
It is good to think about all your movements before the match, like hitting the ball in the opposite corner your opponent is moving, and even to drill your movements (imaginary) to every move of your opponent (she/he is approaching the net. what should I do?)

It will come
by: Joe

I'm guessing that you're still fairly new to the sport. I didn't know what "my game" was when I first started playing either, but I have developed a game over the years, just by hitting a bunch of balls and finding stuff that worked. And it still changes a little bit as time goes on. Keep pluggin'!

Practice to improve strategy
by: Nior

It was my problem too when I started playing tennis. What I did was practice three times a week and play almost the whole morning with friends. I asked a co-tennis player to feed me so I can master those shots that would improve my strategy.
