How do I beat a unrealistic player?

by John Rozzner
(colorado springs, co)

I am a high school senior at my high school. I have been playing tennis for two years and really have ambition to make varsity this year.

I played a friend who was also on my team the following year. He went to a camp in Texas to become a better player.

Originally, I was clearly a better player than him. Moreover, I also went to tennis camp this summer.

We played at a indoor tennis court a couple of days ago. He beat me because he was lobbing it to my backhand. I would repetitively hit it out or in the net.

I know I'm a much better player but he watched me self destruct. He even told the jv coach he beat me.

I'm disappointed because I have been telling my coach how much I've improved. What can I do to not beat myself and beat my teammate?

Two choices
by: Joe

Anytime someone is attacking you like this, you have two choices: get better at defending against the attack, or preventing the attack in the first place. So I would ask myself some questions: WHY am I mishandling all these high backhands? What can I do to try to correct it? And what shots can I hit that will make it more difficult for my opponent to lob to my backhand?

And one more point, that you may not like: the better player is the one that wins. Period. You can have beautiful strokes or whatever, but that's not the object of the game. Strive to become the player that FINDS a way to win.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Foot movement
by: Anonymous

If he keeps lobbing to your back hand, you will have plenty of time to run around it, and unleash a cannon fore hand. If you keep moving your feet, he should learn that a lob to the back hand is not possible, and will quickly take care of your problem. Good Luck.
