How does one beat the really good pusher?

by Ralph
(Chicago, USA)

I coach at the small college level. A few times a year I see really talented pushers and junk ball hitters.

My present thinking is that one needs to a talented player who has power, a strong approach shot, a good volley or can angle the ball or one is toast.

Any other thoughts?

Beating a pusher
by: Tomaz

One of the mental and strategy traps that pushers lure you into is "how to beat them".

That's quite tough and can be frustrating.

Instead, ask yourself this question: How is pusher going to beat you?

They have no weapons, how are they going to do it? Don't let them play with you, instead show them how ineffective they are and then they'll break down.

Beating a Pusher
by: Paul

One of the best ways to beat a pusher is to bring them in and make them volley. Most pushers do not like playing at the net. I would stress to your players to not try to pass them on the first shot but make them hit one or even two volleys to set up an easy pass or put-away.

thinking of ways.
by: kolt.

i play highschool tennis, i see pushers win matches and tournements with ease. if all they are going to do is push it. then push it back with more and more topspin. when you push them back past the baseline come in and put it away, this tactic has worked for me countless times.

Analyze your strokes
by: Dennis

I almost quit tennis because I had so much trouble with a pusher. I hired a tennis coach to find the solution to that type of player. It turns out that I was not hitting my ground strokes technically correct at all...even though I had been playing for 20 years. I was good...but definitely beatable. Hire a coach, buy tapes or look on "you tube" for ways to hit the balls properly. Now I make those pushers pay for what I consider a weaker style of play.
