How to beat a net rusher

by Mohamed
(United Arab Emirates)

I've been playing for 10 years and I am 19 years of age. My problem in tennis is that I play with a guy who has the lowest shots ever, and am kinda tall so I face a problem returning these kinds of shots.

The other problem is that I return his serve with a good slice usually in the middle and he comes rushing to the net and doesn't give me a chance!

I'll say I have problems with net players! Because I am a baseliner!

Please give me the best solution. It's been a while since I've won.

And let me add something more ...

My game is not stable. I just never know if this day would be my day or I'll play like a starter.

What should I have in mind that would keep me confident all the time?

What is it a volley Player hates
by: Michael

Hi, there are a few things missing. I am a serve and volley guy and i approach with slice returns to the weak side.

Is your slice deep enough and to the feet?
Is his approach flat and fast or a slow medium looping shoot into your weak side?

Flat and fast , leaves open court he has to cover. A slow shot gives him more time to come to the front , but i hate to get a lob return, have to hassle all the way back and set it all up fresh. Try to practice the slice to go down the line to his weak side, gives you more time to correctly position yourself and he has to move first sideways in order to attack. Down the middle it is easy to go forward on, if it is not down at the feet.

The first volley. How do you set up the shot for his volley??

2 difficult volleys i can tell you about. When your ball comes fast to the center of my body. Or low dropping fast behind the net with out power and i have to stretch for it either side.

It is difficult to lift a low power ball with a stretch over the net.

So you look for: to tie him up and stretch him all the time and lop him all the time if he penetrated to deep to the net and catch him moving forward (in motion).

So you want him guessing, whether you go cross or down the line, lop or volley tied up or stretch. And loop over his backhand, just high nothing fancy high.

Hope that helps. Let me know

Dont be 1 dimensional.

Don't forget the lob
by: Terry J

I agree with the previous poster, but I also think it's important to hit a topspin lob to your opponents backhand side.
