How To Defeat Fear and Anger

by Mohamed
(Cairo)

I am a junior who has experienced those two feelings (fear and anger) and before I didn't know how to deal with them.

But know I believe I have the keys to destroy them.

My first feeling was fear of losing to low ranked players. I was choking and when I lost to one of them and it was a nightmare.

But I sat down and talked to myself: "So, now you lost because you were afraid to lose, so why become afraid of these low ranked players when you can stand and fight the high ranked ones?"

So every time I play a low ranked player I concentrate on my game plan and I tell myself: "I am gonna attack and gonna win" and every thought of fear in my mind I just say "yeah right" and I forget it until my negative thoughts are destroyed.

The second problem was anger, it makes you ousted from the game for a while.

So when I approach a feeling of anger I try to use it positively by getting the strength of the anger into running fast and thinking right until the anger is gone and it helped me many times in danger of losing and I won.

And you will too if you try making your anger positive and behaving like a warior, a matador like Nadal, or a king like Federer.

Not believing every thought
by: Tomaz

Mohamed,

Excellent advice and you are on the right path in both situations.

We need to learn to ignore fear since it almost NEVER helps.

And transforming anger into energy is an excellent way of dealing with it.

Good stuff!

Fear and Anger
by: Dave Kayll

We must remember that tennis is a duel. A duel not only with our opponent but ourselves too!

The quickest way I found to alleviate fear was to focus on a stroke I knew was a weapon that I trusted.

MAKING EVERY EFFORT TO PLAY THAT TRUSTED SHOT AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE ON THE COURT AND THE FEAR WAS LOST!

As for the ANGER, well that can be channeled a la McEnroe or Connors or you can use what I use when I'm nervous.

I STAND STILL AND TENSE MY WHOLE BODY UP, FROM MY TOES TO MY HEAD AND HOLDING MY BREATH AT THE SAME TIME, FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS.

THIS HAS THE EFFECT OF RELAXING THE MUSCLES IF NERVOUS BUT ALSO DISSIPATING ANGER AS WELL!

Fear of Losing
by: Anonymous

One time I was playing a person who was fairly as good as me and I lost the first set and just went down from there. I lost because when I lost the first set, I didn't think I could win the next set so my advice is when you lose don't keep it with you. It's over.
