How to handle players with extreme top spin

by Allan Foster
(Baltimore, MD)

I have been playing competitively now for a couple of years and always seem to have problems with guys who hit with extreme top spin.

I know the standard advice it to take the ball on the rise but was wondering if there was anything else I can be doing to make the matches more competitive.

good question??

I have the same problems....many people say that your best bet would be to just play as far back as possible; this doesn't help a bit because the guy just hits droppers.

When I play an opponent like this, I start stiffing up and hit all the balls with low pace or out.

HOW TO HANDLE TOP SPIN.
by: Leotj the Prophet.

You have to learn how to use severe underspin, and float the ball back to them deep in the court until they start getting tired. It is much more energy efficient to hit the ball with underspin because the final movement of the racquet is downward, with gravity. Turn sideways, raise the racquet like you are going to chop a watermelon in half at an angle of approximatly 120 degrees. Pull the handle down and let the head follow, with the elbow out front of the stroke. Hold onto the handle with a firm grip and a stiff wrist. The stroke is exactly opposite with the backhand. This floater is easy for the topspinner to hit but they WILL get tired. Your games will last longer with more enjoyment. Some day, you'll win a game.

SLICE
by: Nick L.

Yeah, as stated above slice (under spin) the ball back, it will naturally go deep and try to keep it as level(low to the net)as possible when it floats your done but otherwise its your best bet.

Thanks,

Nick L.

Don't Panic
by: MIke

I also still didn't find out how to deal with extreme topspin, but I know one thing, you should not be afraid of them.

I started a set against an extreme topspiner and I was really afraid of him and he lead 5-0, and only then I started to stop being afraid of him and went down to 5-2, and then lost that set in a deciding point duece.

Being afraid of extreme topspin is exactly the way to lose to them.
