how to keep focus during a match and how to deal with mistakes

by dustin
(cartersville.Geogia)

My biggest concern is how do I keep focus during a whole match. And how to cut out mistakes in the most important parts of the match in tournaments. And one last thing what to do when I get to worried that dad will be mad if i lose a match I should have won.

Pressure during match play does not help
by: Julian

Hey Dustin,

Thinking that your dad will get mad if you lose a match does not help you but to the contrary, it just adds pressure to you. This creates performance anxiety and tension which is lethal in tennis! I'm sure you would play better without this added weight. I'd suggest you talk to him nicely and tell him how you feel about it. Tell him that it doesn't help you when you're thinking of him getting mad. Propose to do something nice after the match (win or lose) that you look forward to. Grab something to eat, take a drive, etc and spend some time celebrating the positive as well as the things that could be improved.

Understand you're not going to win all matches. Besides the matches you lose always teach you something and help you identify where to make improvements.

How to focus more? Take the pressure off by not thinking about bad future consequences. Your focus will improve when you're relaxed and not afraid of future negative consequences.
