by matthew
(melbourne, victoria, australia)

well i play points tournaments and i always get out first round and i am angry. i always play versus unbeatable players with massive serves and have no weakness.

i try to hit the ball as i hard as i possibly can and they just and winner. i try everything and still hit winners on every part of the court what do i do.

Getting past that accursed first round
by: Nick

Getting past the first round in one's tournament career is difficult to get done at first.

Part of it is luck of the draw. During my first few tournaments I always played a seed in the first round. Eventually I got a good draw.

Your perception of your opponents having "no weakness" is untrue. Soderling claims that Federer has "no weakness", yet Nadal finds so much success attacking Federer's backhand. Everyone has a weakness or two.

There is a weakness and if you find it, attempt to exploit it. This is only if you are able to reliably do so.

Hitting the ball as hard as you can is a recipe for disaster. There is always a trade off with power and control in tennis. If you are able to direct the ball well and consistently hit it as hard as you can, then you would probably be holding the trophy right now.

Playing emotional tennis instead of logical tennis leads too many unnecessary errors.

Find a speed that you can consistently hit in and place that can hurt your opponent. In order to hurt your opponent you need "both" placement and power.

Relying on hitting winners to win a match is a very risky game plan. By decreasing your unforced errors you force you opponent to have to "win" the point as opposed to you giving it to them.

Making unforced errors is ok, but by decreasing your errors by playing more consistent aggressive tennis your results will improve.

Good luck in the next tournament.
