I enjoy doubles better than singles only in USTA matches

I am a USTA 3.0 captain and lost 3 singles players this year. I love doubles and get psyched to play it.

Our coach needs me to play some singles matches due to lack of players and instead of being excited I am terrified. I know if I use what I have I can win, but feel I crack under pressure alone on the court.

My first match is June 3rd. I don't want to let my team down.

singles vs doubles
by: Vaidas

Hello, indeed doubles differ from singles to some extent in tennis, but as you have stated in your post,- you feel you can.. that means the main obstacles for playing solid singles game might be inner distrust in yourself? If that is true - like it is said in this website logo: Make Your Mind Your Best Ally..
From my own experience, I am rather solid singles player, but I do not love playing doubles. However, turning to seniors game doubles become more and more often and I need also to change my mind about that. I know why I dislike doubles a bit - it's because I do not feel so comfortable at the net.. But it is good I know it and after I adapted my game the better results came soon.
So good luck in Your tournament!

Playing singles at 3.0 level
by: Anonymous

Positioning is more important in singles than in doubles. A goog way for you to do that at 3.0 level is to mirror the position of your opponent. If your opponent is standing a little bit to the right of the mid point of his baseline, you will go to the same position on your side after you hit the ball. If he or she stands at a mid point between the mid point of his baseline and the sideline, you would do the same after you hit your shot. You get the picture ? (2) Hit the ball way above the net to get good depth and margin of error. And hit most of your balls cross-court for safety. (3) don't try to kill the ball unless you really have a weapon to do so. At your level, the best way to win a match is to let your opponent make more mistakes. (4) Be patient, be the last one to hit the ball across the net.
Hope these suggestions help.
Most of all, have fun ! It is only a game.

No pressure
by: Tennis.

Hi. Well some players prefer to play doubles and other singles. The point is that they play tennis.
But if you play more doubles than singles, when time for singles comes you feel a bit afraid.
You are used to the doubles alley and you make pressure on yourself.
No one else can make that pressure just you. It's normal that expectations exsist, but you make the pressure.
Just calm and remember why you are doing this, becouse you love tennis and want to get better. Well players get better with playing matches, getting experience. Losing or winning the match you will be more experienced. (We often learn from the errors we make)
Just enjoy it and soon you'll fell in love with singles.

All the Best in your matches.
Remember you can do it!!!
