just got back from injury

I have been in the hospital and been doing rehab for 2 1/2 years after being hit by a car... now im in full health once again just got into the gym but i want play tennis again since i was playing tennis before...

im now 20 and im really interested in playing tennis again but how do i get back... i feel unsure about my forehand and my backhand is back to being weak..

every time i hit my forearm shot the ball is flying like im a newbie! which im not cuz i have been playing since 12... so any pointer as to how i can hit my forearm again..

maybe should i tilt the face in a closed position?
and no, there are no more injury or any thing that can hamper my playing ability or physical wellness..

and do i flick my wrist a little bit when i hit my cross court shots?

Be patient getting back to Tennis.
by: Julian

You've been away from tennis a considerable amount of time. Sometimes after just 2 weeks of not playing I feel my strokes are not at their best. So be patient, tennis requires lots of practice and attention to detail, just take your time to get back into your game gradually.

Your "flying" forehands can be caused by a variety of reasons. But the first thing that comes to mind is that in an attempt to generate topspin (you stated you've played from age 12 so I'm assuming you're familiar with this) you might just be hitting up with a bit too much of an open racket face, resulting in -mostly- a flat upward shot. So yes, closing the racket's head a bit by changing your grip more towards a western one may help.

But don't forget to make sure you generate enough racket head speed (by properly rotating hips and shoulders and taking the racket back) so as to assure effecting the ball with topspin. The racket's trajectory (momentum) from the back to the point of contact will make a huge difference in the quality and amount of topspin you generate.

Other than that I'd highly recommend the tutorials throughout this website and all of Tomaz Mencinger publications.

Enjoy your Tennis!
