My Strokes

by tyler
(norwalk CA)

I've been playing for quite a time now.... about one and a half years. I was taught by some college coaches... but i've ended up creating my own shots...

meaning, my backhand is "weird" in that i hold the racquet with my right hand at the butt, and i put my left hand on top of it...

on my forehands i hold it western, but my pinky and ring fingers are off of the raquet, near the butt...

my serve is the same as my forehand, but continental grip, with two fingers off... my backhand is REALLY good, my forehand is good, and i have the best placement with my serve...

BUT my coach says that "i'm the only person who does that... so it must be.....WRONG"

I try to change my grip but its so awkward and i'm really not that good with them... i need help learning cuz whenever im out there, i try but no success..

weird stroke mechanics
by: Anonymous

Hi,

There is always this question you have to ask when something has to change: 'WHY'

1. I can't hit with good ball quality
2. I hurt (fysically) myself now of in the long run with this strokes

If you answer 'yes' then you have to chance in order to become a better player.

What is good ball quality:

the right amount of:
spin ( and type of spin)
speed
height
direction

for the stroke you intended to hit!

To read about the five ball controls, read my article: http://www.passion-4-tennis.com/support-files/fivecontrols.pdf

To read about the shot selection, read my article : http://www.passion-4-tennis.com/support-files/shotselection.pdf

My strokes

Why change if everything is as you say. I would not risk changing anything, as long as it feels good and solid when you strike the ball. Tennis as the owner of this website say is about feeling, not how you swing your arm. If you get very good feel when you strike the ball, and it goes wherever you want it to go, then the mechanics must be right. Stop worrying unless you are hurting yourself physically with your stroke mechanics.
