by pulkit
(india)

i am an 18 year old guy and these days preparing for the futures...

i serve well but am very inconsistent with it. it is very off n on. some days i am hitting aces while some days i am striving to get my first serve in..

and also my second serve is not very good, i am not able to serve on T from the deuce court .. i end up hitting it in the hands of the opponent & my slice serve is good so i use it more often to go wide.. please help me on this..

Develop A Serve You Can Always Count On
by: Julian

Although I'm aware there's an ITF "Futures" in New Delhi, India (that's the Pro Circuit) I think it would be safe to assume you're probably not referring to the professional circuit right? In any case, you don't provide with a lot of information as far as what you're preparing for, how long you've been playing, your approximate level, etc, so it's hard to get an idea of what's going on with you. Nevertheless, here's a few general things that occurred to me that could be encouraging and a positive way to look at your situation.

The serve is perhaps the toughest shot to master in tennis because for it to be dependable (and consistent) a good number of things must (pretty much) always happen in the same way, either consecutively and/or also simultaneously. I'm sure you've noticed that it's not unusual for even touring players to have bad serving days... and this still happens after 10-15 years of practice since childhood.

So be patient and be willing to put some quality time into it. In essence, the inconsistency you're describing sounds like the result of not having developed a solid routine (serving technique) that you trust and feel you can count on. Your service routine/motion and consequent result, should be such that on your worst day you can still be confident you'll put the ball in play without just setting it up for your opponent to crush it for a winner. I, for one, have no doubt this is possible with patience and lots of consistent practice.

You say you have days when you have no problem serving and even producing aces. I'd suggest you pay attention to your overall technique then... what are you doing specifically? What are your feet, legs, hips, torso, shoulders, arms, wrist, hands doing? (Btw, It sounds like you may not have a coach right now, so ask a friend to shoot a video of yourself and watch what's happening) Why can't you reproduce this serving routine/motion/technique consistently as to produce the same or similar effects? Or improve it if necessary? Is it a mental thing maybe, in which you get "in your head", distracted, which makes you end up losing focus/concentration?

Other than that I'd suggest you check out some very cool serving tutorial videos (from Tomaz) on the "Instruction" section on the menu on your left. They should give you an excellent foundation for comparing and analyzing with your own serve.

Best of Luck!
