Partner Singles

by Bret Hendricks
(Allen, Texas, USA)

You have 2 players on each side, but only 1 plays at a time.

A singles point is played (serve or feed anywhere to start).

The players that are out near the back fence are ready with a ball in their hands to serve or feed anywhere.

Immediately, when one of the players misses the out person on the team who missed, goes in and feeds or serves the ball anywhere.

Keep score individually or as a team.

Variation:
You can switch when a player misses or when you have won 3 points in a row (then you score a point).

*The only time the serve start won't work is if the player has a huge or extremely accurate serve which is very rare in junior players. Then they have to feed to start the point or serve in a box like normal.

Keeping the players alert
by: Tomaz

Thanks Bret,

Anything that keeps a high level of alertness and concentration is very useful for juniors.

They can get distracted by so many things (and thoughts) so this drill is really good to keep them ready all the time.

Intensity, recovery, split step, movement, fun
by: Bret

I am responding to the comment of the purpose of the drill.

1. The points can be played much quicker and at a greater intensity than when only 2 players are drilling singles.

2. After the miss, the feed/serve anywhere doesn't give much time for recovery.
The receiver must regain balance, drift, predict, split step, and move to the feed or they won't get it.

3. It's a 4 person/doubles atmosphere, very competitive and fun. It allows 4-6 players to work out singles with intensity when you only have one court and need singles practice.
