Playing the junk baller

by JK

I played a slightly older woman who hit with zero pace but lots of spin.

Tons of backspin (the ball would hit just past the service line and die there), sometimes the ball would bounce and spin away from me, sometimes it would bounce and spin into my body. She got to every ball I hit.

I like to hit hard, but quickly realized that would not work. I tried to hit safe and just get it in. I tried coming to the net (she had an amazing topspin lob).

It was extremely frustrating. I was in every game (many games at duece) but could only pull out 1 win each set.

My only thought now is I should have come in sooner to take her shot in the air, once it bounced it was never higher than the net.

Try to have an all-court game. Use drop shots to surprise her, come to the net often but not too close since she has a good lob. Hit crosscourt often to be more consistent. And one more thing.... Don't get frustrated! Relax and don't show any emotion to a junkballer or they will gain confidence.
