six year old competing wth 10 year olds

by MOM
(Laredo, TX)

My son is six years old and is competing in tournaments against bigger kids since there are no kids at his age as competitive as him. He is about to compete at the USTA ZAT tournament and is having trouble slicing the ball from base line and he loves doing it but is not as successful as he wants to be. HELP!

Focusing on the game plan
by: Nick

If your son is just about to compete in a tournament, changing the technical foundation of his slice would be difficult at this point.

If he changes his slice then it probably would be difficult for him to trust that stroke during competitive situations. He may revert back to his old slice shot.

A good idea is for him to go over his game plan for how he is going to play, rather then change his strokes.

Is he going to play consistent, aggresive, is he going to try and play his best shot to his opponents weaker shot? (usaully forehand-backhand).

If he has regular flat-topspin groundstrokes then it would be a better idea for him to resort to that if he hasn't had success yet with slice.

At younger levels success is usaully linked with consistency, having him hit flat-topspin shots with a high arc deep in the court would be his best bet.

Changing his slice would be a good idea for practice later on. For now he should figure out how he is going to play his eventual opponent using his present strengths and abilities.

Good luck with your son's tournament, hope he has fun.
