That my ranking will get lower and that I will disappoint myself in playing tennis.

by Paul
(Holland)

That my ranking will get lower and that I will disappoint myself in playing tennis.

I feel like failing if I lose matches of my level, my ranking will get lower and it will discourage me to continue to play tennis and enjoy it as much as I did.

Realistic look at tennis
by: Tomaz

Hi Paul,

First let's talk about rankings; if you do not wish for rankings to fluctuate, you attempt to live in a dream world.

It's a nice fairy tale but that's not reality. Everyone's rankings will at some point go down and that's how it is.

It doesn't mean that you suck, that you are a bad tennis player but it means that the world is very big, that many people play tennis, that you may need some time to learn a few new things, that you may lose confidence for a while and then get it back again and so on.

It's normal, that's how it is.

If you have been told differently, examine the real motives of people trying to convince you otherwise.

Look at the rankings of 20 or 30 ATP players in the last 5 years and see how they change - up AND down.

As for disappointing yourself; you can disappoint yourself only if you have unrealistic expectations about yourself and tennis.

You may expect to win many more matches than you are realistically capable of. The outcome of the match is not within your control and you cannot guarantee that you'll win.

Nadal couldn't guarantee that he would win with Soderling. Look around you, these loses happen all the time to everyone. That's how it is in tennis and life.

You may also disappoint yourself by expecting that you will play well. Well, you won't, no matter what you do.

Sometimes you'll play badly for countless reasons (biorhythm, other mental issues - school, friends, parents, ...) and that's how it is.

Whoever convinced you that you can play well if you try hard was very wrong. It is impossible to guarantee good play.

You can achieve high probability of playing well but cannot guarantee it.

The ONLY thing on which you can base your satisfaction is giving 100% effort no matter what the circumstances.

That's the only thing within your control. You cannot do more than give your best. That's reality.

All other expectations (stories as I like to call them) are not realistic and just cause you pain when they are not met.

What I am telling you here is something 99% of people you'll talk will NOT agree with. They have never thought like that; they like to blame other people and they like when other people feel guilty and not worthy because that makes them feel more.

This is the reason why you have been told things and you have simply accepted them without really questioning them.

Question everything.

Can you win if you try hard? Really? Who can?

Can you always play well? Really? Who can? Show me just 1 player on this planet...

When you adjust your expectations and accept loses, lowering of your rankings and days when you don't play well as something NORMAL, you will feel no pressure.

And guess what? With that kind of attitude, you will in fact start turning those bad days into better days and start winning more matches.

my son is playing tennis and i want he should play by getting some achievement and not as the other parents when they think for their children that if they win the game then it is better and not achieved then its ok. O course there is a similar question as other parents are asking but it is different from my view and i am not the same. i think in different way when i am paying my lot of valuable time then my aim is to return from court with an achievement and therefore i want the time should not go in vain. There should some achievement and to get better result as the high ranking players are getting and maintained the record unbeatable records. My son was a swimmer and was doing better but I left it due to lack of good guide. I am living in a small town and I want this should be done in better way. Above all in gist I want that if your help is beneficial to me and my son is benefited then I would like to go ahead. I hope you will give me better guide line then I should come up with a giant personality.
Thanks

Awaiting your valuable reply from your end.
