Tips to getting the racket back for fast serves/hits

by Christina
(USA)

I'm good at getting my racket back to hit well on the ball machine. However, when a person hits it to me quickly, I have trouble estimating when I should get my racket back for the stroke.

Should it be before it hits the ground or after? (obviously while knowing if it is going to be a forehand or backhand) I know the stroke, but it's not working on the court because I'm not getting the racket back. Do you have any tips?

Thanks!

racket back
by: Walter

Hi Christina,

1. The ball is leaving the racket from your opponent

a. do a split-step and get in hitting position as quickly and in a balanced way as you can BEFORE the ball bounce on your side!

2. The ball bounce on your side

b.Turn your shoulders, bring the racket-head straight or in a small loop back

c.in the following rhythm: slow-accelerate trough contact!

I hope this information will help you.

You can do also the following drill to improve your timing and rhythm:

Say outloud: bounce-and-hit!

a. bounce: you're in the hitting stance
b. and: you take your racket back (not to fast)
c. hit: you accelerate through contact

Hit the ball in front
by: Tomaz

Walter already shared some good tips but in the end you must know why do you need to prepare at the right time.

Because you want to hit the ball in front where you can see it well and have good control and weight transfer.

Just try to hit the ball where you like it most - somewhere in front where it feels comfortable - and then JUST DO IT.

Your brain will automatically adjust your swing and timing related to the speed of the ball so that you will hit it in front!

Racket back then move
by: comebackqueen

Awesome advice above, my coach says get your racket back first then move in and adjust to the ball! Good luck!

early racket back
by: Walter

Look at the pro's or talented young player, they do it the most effective way. The racket will go in a loop when the ball bounce on their court.

This is a bio-mechanics issue regarding inertia.
Also a fine way to store elastic energy.
You timing and rithym is easier with a racket back when the ball bounce ..

Good luck!
