When Persistence Doesn't Work

by Sayp
(Singapore)

I know of people (including me) that would use the same shot over and over again if it works for the first time.

Like for example that you are playing a match and the ball comes to you, and for some unknown divine reason, you (unknowingly?) return the ball with extreme power and spin to win the point.

But when you try the shot again, it seems to not work and sometimes the ball lands out due to the power you exerted.

And you will keep persisting in doing the shot, making the ball out.

So I just wanna say that if you go make some killer shot you never made before, don't try to do it again.

Just play like u normally do.

Maybe when you did that shot, you were on a sudden high or someting.

Hope and reality
by: Tomaz

Good point, Sayp!

One of the reasons why we keep trying the shot is HOPE.

And this hope can blind us from reality which tells us, that in the long term the shot doesn't work.

So one needs to become aware of the blinding effect of the hope.

A shot we call our hallmark
by: Eitan

Hi Sayp

It is well known that in tennis you have to mix your shots, otherwise you become predictable and a good opponent will exploit it. However, it is also true that we all tend to develop a shot we call our hallmark e.g. our serve, our croos-court forehand and so on. It is therefore a good idea to play to our strengths and produce our shot regularly whenever the opportunity presents itself. We have to go for those likely winners.

Statistical factors are inevitable and 100% success is unlikely. Plus, if you have a bad day, it affects everything. Yet there is always another day and another chance for that special shot to work. Don't give up yours.
