Winning with a weaker backhand

by ahmed sarac
(bosnia)

I practice with my friend and he is much better than me, but only because he plays on my backhand all the time.

He is an attacking baseliner and I am so close to beating him, but I never do.

Does anyone have a tactic for this kind of player??

beating the agressive baseliner
by: Nick L.

My advice to you is to use a drop shot and bring your opponent to the net. keep in mind once you have hit the drop shot that it is best for you to also come to the net and try and end the point at the net. Be aware the most common attack on a drop shot is to return it with another drop shot, all the more reason for you to come up to the net.

Other ideas

The drop shot idea is sound. You can also "run around" your backhand whenever possible. You can also work on improving your backhand! Good luck.

weaker backhand
by: Nick L.

Well, I would say still try to play the drop shots and when he gets them hit a passing shot or lob to win the point. Even if he hits to your backhand you seem to be perfectly able to throw up a lob with your backhand or just continue to work hard on your backhand and everything will fall into place. Remember practice, practice, practice, its the only way to overcome your weaknesses.

Thanks,

Backhand Slice
by: Mike

I also have a weak backhand. What I do is that when I'm playing an important match or point, I use the backhand slice, which is much easier to perform, and because I use it a lot, the backhand slice makes many points for me.

Still, always remember that the backhand is one of the most important shots in tennis, and good players will spot that your backhand is weaker and hit it to your backhand. I remember reading somewhere that you should not try to run away from hitting a certain shot, but hit it and make it better.

As I said, if your playing in training or against a weaker player in a point that doesn't matter much, try to practice your backhand.
